October Is National Disability Employment Awareness Month

Learn How You Can Educate Your Community

October has arrived. For those of us at RDS, it’s a special time because it’s National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)—a time dedicated to raising awareness about a cause that is very near and dear to our hearts.

For over 20 years, RDS Same Day Delivery has proudly employed and worked with clients with disabilities. We’ve even garnered awards recognizing our efforts. This year, as we reflect on the 2018 theme, “America’s Workforce: Empowering All,” we celebrate the roles our own employees play in our everyday success and recommit ourselves to empowering them in their careers.

One way our company follows this thread of empowerment is through our training programs. Over the years, we have trained and mentored numerous employees with disabilities to become excellent street messengers. Our program is tremendously successful and our employees continue to prove their value, strength and commitment. Currently, RDS works closely with the New York State Education Department’s Adult Career and Continuing Education Services –Vocational Rehabilitation Department to help adults achieve their employment goals.

“I recognized that there is a community that can add so much value to our team,” says RDS President Larry Zogby. “These individuals want to work, have positive attitudes, are productive and are pleased to be a part of the working community. We all win when working with this population—the people, the clients and the company.”

Curious how you can support the NDEAM cause in your own community? Here are three ways you can help:

  1. Share the message. Create a display or design a poster in your school or place of business that promotes positive messages about your community’s commitment to a disability-inclusive workforce.
  2. Educate employees. People are often afraid of what they don’t know. Educate management and employees about disability inclusion by holding a training seminar or hiring a speaker to educate staff about the topic.
  3. Sign up to help on Disability Mentoring Day! This day, typically held on the third Wednesday in October, promotes career development for youth with disabilities through hands-on programs, continuous mentoring and job shadowing. Learn more here.
