RDS Supports Equal Opportunities for All

Our Training Provides Jobs and Creates Rewarding Careers

As October quietly tiptoes in with its chillier weather, it’s important to remember that there’s more to this month than fall festivals and trick-or-treating. Sure, these events are exciting and allow New Yorkers to appreciate the Northeast’s change of seasons. But there’s an important cause that RDS focuses on each and every October—National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

The theme of this year’s NDEAM campaign is: “The Right Talent, Right Now.” At RDS, we couldn’t agree more with this message. Led by President Larry Zogby, the team at RDS Same Day Delivery has been a longtime supporter of employing talented people with disabilities. We take great pride in providing these outstanding workers with skills that can lead to promising careers.

To bring awareness to this important cause, we hosted a lunch in July with various employment and career agencies from the tri-state area, including:

  • Urban Upbound’s Youth Career Pathways Program
  • Family Independence Administration
  • NYC BusinessLink
  • Birch Family Services
  • ACCES-VR (Adult Career and Continuing Education Services-Vocational Rehabilitation), New York State Education Department
  • America on Demand

Our goals during this gathering were to create awareness about employment opportunities within our organization and to foster relationships between businesses and agencies that help place those with disabilities in rewarding jobs. We used our success stories as motivation and inspiration. Each year, the end result is rewarding for everyone involved.

Taking Chances Always Pays Off

Throughout the years, RDS has hired many hard-working folks—often through our connections with agencies that support people with disabilities. Our success rate has been phenomenal! Of course, it’s easy when you care enough to give people real opportunities—and the training they need to succeed.

Our process is simple: We focus on important qualities in job candidates such as motivation, kindness, ambition, politeness and a willingness to work hard. Then, we provide training and education to mold them into model employees. For example, we first train new recruits to be foot messengers. This is an entry-level position, but it teaches skills such as communication, socialization, teamwork, conflict resolution, time management and more. It also builds self-esteem, confidence and satisfaction in a job well done. Many of our foot messengers build upon these skills and advance to become dispatchers, dispatch managers and fleet managers!

A Single Opportunity Can Lead to a Fulfilling Career

As we recognize National Disability Employment Awareness Month this October, we encourage other business owners to consider providing opportunities to these workers. We can tell you first-hand that we’ve employed many wonderful people who’ve gone on to reach their dreams of finding truly rewarding careers.
